Cruise ships come in all sizes; the average ship has six to eight decks.

The various decks are similar to the various floors in a hotel. Each deck has specific functions. Some decks are primarily public areas with such facilities as dining rooms, swimming pools, lounges, beauty salons, etc. Some decks are primarily guest quarters known as staterooms or cabins.

Decks beneath the water line are used for food storage, maintenance equipment and supplies. The ship's engine room is below the water line.

I'D LIKE TO KNOW...

About wheelchair accessible cabins.

Cruise ships are equipped with wheelchair accessible cabins. They are generally located near elevators to make it easier for the passenger to navigate around the ship. It is always a good idea to notify cruise personnel in advance that a person in a wheelchair will be onboard so that accommodations can be made to make the cruise more enjoyable.
